Serve

Luke 1:38 Mary pledges to serve God

Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

HWalton United Church, Oakville, Ontario

Mary speaks with such simplicity and grace in this passage. Her words and her serenity are an unassuming and peaceful acceptance of God’s plan for her life. Her willingness to serve is all the more incredible for the magnitude of what Mary is taking on – being unmarried and pregnant. The uncomplicated ‘yes’ which Mary gives to the angel, and to God’s direction can be an inspiration to all of us, who at one time or another have given ‘yes, if only,’ or ‘maybe,’ or ‘not right now’ answers to God’s purpose in our lives. Where is God asking us to serve Him? Where might we give an uncomplicated “here am I” to an opportunity to share God’s love in the world?

Understanding God, You see all our resistance and hesitance and uncertainty; You know all our doubts and discomfort and reluctance. Inspire us, through the courage of Mary, to recognize the opportunities in front of us to share Your love and proclaim Your word. Strengthen and sustain us to be channels of Your purpose here on earth. Amen.

Thank you for joining us on this prayerful path through Advent.
Blessings and best wishes for 2019.
