Blessed - Advent Devotional @ Walton United Church, Oakville, Ontario

Advent can be a crazy time when it never feels that we have enough: enough groceries, enough gifts bought, enough time. In contrast, Elizabeth’s joy (see below) speaks of the abundance of the Holy Spirit at work in the world and of the blessings given by God in unexpected circumstances. Our world is wired for scarcity, and it can be one of our most corrosive fears. In contrast, God’s love, freely available, reinforces abundance. And the more we can focus on this spirit at work, the more we can reflect and share peace.

Loving God, nurture me to appreciate all that I have in my life and to deepen my awareness of the blessings You have given to me. Remind me that Your love is abundant. Support me to reject the fear driven by scarcity and to remember that there is always enough to go round. Amen.

Luke 1: 41-42; 45

When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. … And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.”

Thank you for joining us on this prayerful path through Advent.
Blessings and best wishes for 2018.
