Comfort - Advent Devotional @ Walton United Church, Oakville, Ontario

The angel Gabriel is tasked with several of the major conversations in the nativity story, appearing to announce both the conception of John the Baptist and that of Jesus, and his appearance is clearly disconcerting as the first thing he has to say on each occasion is “Do not be afraid.” It’s telling that words of reassurance such as “fear not” or “do not be afraid” are some of the most commonly repeated phrases throughout the entirety of the Old and New Testaments – God seeking to reassure and comfort humans. Even without the appearance of angels, it is just as true and relevant for us today. Fear not; take comfort – God loves us and the birth of our saviour is approaching.

Loving God, as You encouraged Mary and others through Your angel Gabriel, comfort me now as I face each day. Free me from the pressures and expectations that can hound me at this time of year, and reassure me with Your unending love. Amen.

Luke 1: 28-30

And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
