Light - Advent Devotional @ Walton United Church, Oakville, Ontario

John’s famous opening lines (see below) speak to the all-encompassing mystery and permanence of God. There is so much in our world and our faith that we do not understand and this passage captures that essence without necessarily explaining it. What is clear though is that a world plagued with darkness was not a foreign concept either for John or even God. Equally clear is the presence of light, through the life of Jesus. Bringing love and hope and faith, the light will break through the darkness, which cannot overcome it. As we struggle in different parts of our lives with darkness and gloom, God’s love shines for us, whether we see it as a beacon or a candle, a flicker of hope or a new dawn entirely; either way the light will always endure and shines out in hope and love.

Loving God, in my times of darkness, remind me of Your light, illuminating the way forward, encouraging me on, radiating Your love. Strengthen me to remember that the darkness does not overcome us and that light and love will triumph. Amen.

John 1:1-5

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.
