The Way - Lent Devotional @ Walton United Church, Oakville, Ontario

We live today in a culture of instant gratification. Our brains, programed to respond to novelty and stimulation, are now addicted to the buzz of new and now. Social experiences ranging from watching TV and movies on-demand to social media, even booking a restaurant table, have been designed and redesigned to keep us hooked on instant enjoyment and hungry for more. The result is a society rife with discontent driven by emptiness and impatience.

Jesus offers us another way. He promises to nurture us and nourish us with his teachings, so that we can find purpose and fulfilment in each day, so that we are never hungry. What do you feed your soul with right now? And is it sustaining or emptying? How can God, perhaps through worship or study, prayer or reflection, inspire you so that your days are filled with purpose and meaning?

Loving God, feed my soul. Nourish me with Your word such that I am filled with meaning and purpose in my days. Support me to turn away from the superficial voices in this world, the empty experiences that can never satisfy. Open my mind instead to the abundant possibilities in my life for knowing and sharing Your love. Amen.

John 6:35

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

Thank you for joining us on this prayerful
journey of reflection through Lent.
