Matthew 1:18 – The conception of Jesus

Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.

God’s promise to be in and with the world is embodied through the Holy Spirit and, right from the first account of creation, God and God’s Spirit are present in the world. As Matthew demonstrated through Jesus’ genealogy, Jesus is wholly human, and now he shows that Jesus—being conceived through the Holy Spirit—is also wholly divine. From the outset then, the Holy Spirit was integral to Jesus’ life and ministry.

It’s almost inconceivable that the power which strengthened and sustained Jesus is also provided to us in our lives. And yet, this is the promise of Jesus, fulfilled at the time of Pentecost and throughout history ever since. The same power that created Jesus as human, that brought God to earth and humankind, works in us. Whatever we seek—patience, strength, or endurance; courage, compassion or peace—the power of the Holy Spirit provides this for us in love.

Majestic Spirit,
Be with me today wherever I may need your guidance and encouragement. Grant me your divine comfort, that I may feel your presence and support with all I undertake. Slow me down if I rush ahead. Strengthen me when I might falter. Prompt me to discern the way ahead. Most of all, still me to recognize your divine presence and eternal love. Amen.

Thank you for joining us on this prayerful path through Advent.
Blessings and best wishes for 2020.
