Promise - Advent Devotional @ Walton United Church, Oakville, Ontario

One of the key aspects of the Gospel of Matthew is that it emphasises the way in which Jesus fulfilled Old Testament prophecies. This is clearly seen in Matthew’s depiction of the nativity which makes frequent reference to prophecies being fulfilled by the events of Jesus’ birth. Matthew’s approach is a welcome reminder of God’s involvement in our world and of the promises made to us that God keeps: that we are God’s children and are offered a relationship with him; that God hears our cries and concerns and is by our side throughout; that nothing can separate us from the love of God.

Loving God, it is easy to feel distant from You in the hubbub of our society today, amidst the relentless noise of the world, the clamour of demands and the endless treadmill of busy. Remind me of the promises You have made to me and help me to see and appreciate Your fulfilling those promises in my life. Amen.

Matthew 2: 5b-6

“For so it has been written by the prophet:

‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,

are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;

for from you shall come a ruler

who is to shepherd my people Israel.’”
