Rejoice - Advent Devotional @ Walton United Church, Oakville, Ontario

Zephaniah’s prophecy of the Messiah (see below), like Isaiah’s words yesterday, also shouts with joy and praise, rejoicing that the Lord, our God, is in our midst, and that joy is as true for us today as it was for the Israelites thousands of years ago. And yet there’s more; it is not only we who are rejoicing. The Lord our God also rejoices – we bring Him gladness and jubilation, and we are to be replenished through God’s love. It’s a beautiful, and perhaps unexpected image – the idea of God rejoicing over each one of us, of God seeking to play a bigger role in our lives and to have us feel renewed by and in His love.

Loving God, thank You for Your love and rejoicing. Thank You for making me who I am and for taking joy in Your creation. Empower me to gain strength from the love You have for me and renew me to face all that lies in the days and years ahead. Amen.

Zephaniah 3: 14, 17

Sing aloud, O daughter Zion;

shout, O Israel!
Rejoice and exult with all your heart,
O daughter Jerusalem!
The Lord, your God, is in your midst;
a warrior who gives victory;
he will rejoice over you with gladness,
he will renew you in his love;
he will exult over you with loud singing
