Salvation

2019 Advent Devotional – Day 12

Salvation

Matthew 1:21The angel instructed Joseph to name the child Jesus

“She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.

God’s promise to humankind is thus represented in one word, a name: Jesus.

The name Jesus means ‘God is salvation’ and the angel’s instruction to Joseph identified Jesus from the outset as our Saviour. God had seen the struggles of humankind to follow his teaching and live a life of love, and God no longer wanted sin to be a barrier to humanity’s relationship with God.

The immensity of this offer, of God reaching out to humanity in love and forgiveness, is difficult to fully comprehend. The history of the people of Israel, recorded in the Old Testament, shows the centuries of pain and disappointment in this relationship. Time and again, God taught humanity how to live, but constantly the people failed and turned away. For God to persist with us after all that has happened is incredible. And still today, God continues to pursue us, inviting us to reset our lives in the light of God’s eternal love. Such persistence, such love is utterly overwhelming generosity.

Saving God,
You rescue me from myself and my inability to stay true to your teaching. Thank you for loving me with such immensity and commitment that you let nothing prevent my relationship with you. Thank you for forgiving my sins and shortcomings: the wrong I have done, and the things I should have done but haven’t. Thank you for the life and teaching of your Son, Jesus, and the love he shares with us all. Amen.

Thank you for joining us on this prayerful path through Advent.
Blessings and best wishes for 2020.
