Strength - Advent Devotional @ Walton United Church, Oakville, Ontario

The reading today (below) is the Old Testament prophecy that Matthew was referencing in our reading yesterday, and notable in this passage is that Bethlehem’s relative stature (a little clan) will not limit the power of the one who will stand “in the strength of the Lord.” In our world where bigger is so often deemed better and size and status are flaunted at every opportunity, take time to notice and appreciate the little things in life – a snowflake, the flicker of a candle, the sheep in a nativity scene – and to remember that our perceived power and standing are irrelevant when we stand in the strength of the Lord.

Loving God, remind me that the problems and challenges I am facing, which loom so large in my life right now, will one day appear small and insignificant. Sustain me to draw on Your strength and comfort on my passage through this world, and to remember Your majesty and power over all things. Amen.

Micah 5: 2, 4

But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah,
who are one of the little clans of Judah,
from you shall come forth for me
one who is to rule in Israel,
whose origin is from of old,
And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the Lord,
in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God.

Thank you for joining us on this prayerful path through Advent.
