Advent and Christmas are a time to remember and celebrate the first coming of the Lord – the birth of Jesus – but this is only the first act of the narrative. The exact timing of the second act is unknown, and so throughout our joy must run a worshipful alertness for God’s presence and Jesus’ return.
Dear Lord, all-knowing God,
As we lift up our hearts and voices to celebrate the birth of your Son, Jesus Christ, awaken our minds and our lives, to await your return with reverent vigilance; and to see your presence in our world today. Keep us ready.
Amen.
Matthew 24: 36, 42, 44
36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.
44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.
